4th of July Celebrations on School Grounds

Dear Editor,
A favorite pastime for many folks in our country is the celebration of our nation’s birthday, the 4th of July. The celebration comes in many shapes and sizes, and for years the parking lot at Weiser High School has been a gathering place for some local citizens to set off their own fireworks while waiting for the community fireworks display.

The Weiser Board of Trustees, City Fire Department, and Weiser City Police are not opposed to the use of the facility for this purpose, but we do ask people who choose to use the parking lot for their celebrations to follow a few simple guidelines. Please:

 Stay as far away from the buildings as possible (respect established barriers)
 Dispose of your refuse at the end of the evening (garbage cans will be available around the parking lot)
 Use only legal fireworks – including non-aerial fireworks. Non-aerial is defined in Idaho Code (39-2602) as “any fireworks designed to remain on or near the ground and not to travel outside a fifteen (15) foot diameter circle or emit sparks or other burning material which lands outside a twenty (20) foot diameter circle or above a height of twenty (20) feet”.
 Be respectful of school property, others who are using the parking lot for their celebrations, and residents who live near the high school campus
 Understand that conditions may be very dry on the 4th

Violators can be charged with a misdemeanor, but a more important consideration is simply to protect the high school facility and surrounding private properties from any unintended fire hazards.

On behalf of the Weiser Board of Trustees and the Weiser School District, I want to thank you for your cooperation and for your respect for our community by having a safe and enjoyable 4th of July celebration.

Wade Wilson, Superintendent
