On Thursday, April 12th at the Middleton Invite senior Jacen Smith broke Weiser High’s 42 year old record in the Long Jump. Smith jumped 23.5 feet beating out the old record of 22 feet that was set back in 1976 by Dan Leija. Coach Shirts commented, “This record has been a goal of Jacen’s, and he has been flirting with it. On Thursday he really put everything together and nailed the jump.”

Smith shared his thoughts on achieving this goal, “I had a feeling the day before the track meet that I was going to break the record. I knew I was physically capable of doing it, but I just needed to get the mental side down.” Smith shared what happened the day of the meet, “On my second jump I made 21 feet, 10 inches and I was only a few inches off. I was like, whatever, I am just going to go for it. I lined up and I hit the board dead on. I hit 23 and I was pretty excited. I was just trying to break the record not hit 23 feet.”

Smith has a few more goals he would like to achieve this season, “I want to repeat and have a back to back State Champion at the long jump. I would like to win the 100 and the 200 meter, and try to win with our relay team. Four golds would be pretty sweet.” Not only has Smith set high goals for his track season, but his future goals as well. Smith hopes to attend one of the following schools after he graduates this May; Northwest Nazarene University, Boise State, University of Idaho and there are a few Oregon schools he has looked into as well. Smith definitely hopes to participate in Track and Field on a college level, “Full ride would be really cool. I don’t know if that will happen. I still need to finish out my season and see if my marks improve, but competing on a collegiate level is definitely my goal.” Athletics is where Smith’s heart is and so that's the direction he is looking for his future career, “I’m thinking of going into sports medicine or sports management. Maybe physical therapy, something in that area.” As for now, Smith’s focus is to work towards those State goals, “I will try to break some more records this year, I don’t know if I will, but we will have to see.”
