Mayor of Weiser, Randy Hibberd, participated in a walking challenge back in October through the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health. More than 80 mayors across Idaho participated in the event, exceeding step goals by averaging 5,000 steps per day! Mayor Hibberd prefers to ride a bike but for this challenge, he set the bike aside to walk the streets of Weiser.
While racking up the steps for the challenge, Mayor Hibberd walked through town to look at different places where improvements need to be made. For instance, there are many places where sidewalks need to be developed and improved. Having adequate sidewalks might encourage people in town to walk more during nice weather.
According to Blue Cross, the challenge was focused on designating funds for COVID-19 relief efforts or for projects and programs that encourage physical activity in children. With the $1,000 in challenge earnings, Hibberd has decided to donate to the Weiser Memorial Hospital Foundation. They are currently raising funds to acquire outdoor exercise equipment for their Outdoor Gym Project.
The Outdoor Gym Project is aimed toward helping people of all ages access fitness equipment. They are looking at purchasing 6 pieces of double-sided equipment that is designed for being outdoors. The City of Weiser has given permission for the hospital to place the equipment at the City Park, next to the police department. Hibberd has been involved with the hospital for years and believes that community health is essential. The Mayors Walking Challenge gave Hibberd the opportunity to lead by example.
With the donation earnings from Mayor Hibberd as well as other funding going toward this project, the hospital anticipates beginning the project next spring or summer. They are still working on additional funds to pay for labor, installation of the equipment, cement, and final touches. Once the equipment is purchased, it will take about 6 weeks to receive it.
