Betty Belle (Carson) Derig 92, left on another great adventure on February 26, 2017 from her son’s home in Emmett, ID. Mrs. Derig was born in Cambridge, ID on October 17, 1924 to William (Bill) M. and Hattie Carson. Her only sibling William (Bill) Carson Jr. joined the family in 1934. Betty graduated from Washington State University with a BA in History and Political Science. She married Vincent (Bink) Derig in 1948 and together they attended the University of Mexico in Mexico City for a summer before moving to Missoula where they attended classes at the University of Montana. Betty earned her Masters degree in History at the U of M. Upon graduation they returned to Weiser and raised their family, beginning with the arrival of their first child Anna, five years later their first son Paul arrived on the scene, followed 7 years later by their second son Vince Jr. Betty taught school in Wilder for one year (1948) before she and Bink were married. She then taught at Weiser High School (1953-1955) and later at Payette Junior High (1963-1966) before teaching at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, OR for ten years (1966-1976). Betty was an Idaho author and photographer who wrote 5 books and numerous Magazine articles mostly about Idaho history and happenings. She took many of the photographs that were used in the illustrations. One of her books was co-authored with a dear friend Margaret Fuller. Betty was a member of P.E.O., the Twentieth Century Club, Idaho Writers League, Beta Sigma Phi, Weiser Friends of the Library and the Women Geographers. She was also honored by the Idaho Statesman as the Citizen of the Week (artist John Collias). After she was no longer able to live on her own, Betty resided at the P.E.O. Chapter House for two years before moving in with her son and family in Emmett. Betty is survived by her three children daughter Anna Derig Stark (Clarence) Weiser ID, Paul Derig (Kathleen) Emmett, ID, and Vince Derig Jr. (Lisa) Boise, ID, ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Bink, parents Bill and Hattie Carson, brother Bill Carson, and great grandson Tiger Stark. At her request, no funeral services will be held, however, a tribute and wake will be held at the Weiser Episcopal Church in Weiser Idaho, April 21 at 11:00 A.M..
The family would like to thank all of the people at Heart and Home Hospice for their loving care during Mother’s final year. Special thanks to nurses Kayla and Brandi, CNA’s Tracy and Laura, volunteer Barbara for all of the reading and visiting hours, spiritual counselor Sam, Social Worker Kelsey, and all of the members of the Comfort Choir. She loved you all!
