Eugene - Fuji - Hirata

May 13th, 1955 - April 30th, 2017


Eugene “Fuji” Hirata, of Weiser, ID, passed peacefully away at his home with family at his side on April 30, 2017 at the age of 61.

Eugene was born in Hood River, OR on May 13, 1955 thirteen minutes after his twin brother Edward. The family later moved to Idaho in 1962.  He graduated from Weiser High School in 1973, attended Northern Idaho College, and on to receive a BA degree in Education from Eastern Oregon College in La Grande,

Eugene worked his entire life in the grocery business throughout Southern Idaho and Wyoming.  In 2012, he returned to his home in Weiser and worked as the Grocery Manager with Ridley’s Family Markets.  He was a devoted family man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, tennis, golfing and especially his travels to the East Coast.  His recent travels included an Alaskan fishing trip last summer and his visit to Washington DC and New York City in 2015.  Eugene truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; chatting with friends and family, selfless giving, and adoring his nephews and nieces.  Eugene had a unique ability to reach people in a deep and positive way.  He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

Eugene is survived by his mother Charlotte Hirata, father Eichi (Gayle) Hirata of Parkdale, OR, his twin brother Edward (Doreen), brother Harvey (Rhonda), half-brothers Eichi (Ginger) Hirata, Jr. of Thorne Bay, AK and Todd (Jacqueline) Galindo of Mechanicsburg, PA, half-sister Terri (Tyler) Strickland of Star, ID and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

The memorial service and celebration of his life will be held on May 19, 2017 at 11:00am at the Vendome, Weiser, ID.  All friends and family are welcomed.  Pastor Kevin Bettinger of the First Baptist Church will be officiating.  Reception will immediately follow.  Arrangements are under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home of Weiser.

Eugene is preceded in death by his grandparents Takeji and Fumiko Hoashi, his uncle Roy Hoashi, and uncle and aunt Mits and Karie Nakamura.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Weiser High School Athletic Department and Angel Wings Network, Inc., 442 State St., Weiser, ID 83672.  The family of Eugene Hirata wishes to thank St. Luke’s Mountain State Tumor Institute and Signature Hospice organization and staff for their compassionate care and support.
