Last week Mattie Shirts and Kylee Quinton from Weiser High School signed their letters of intent to attend the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho.
Mattie Shirts received a scholarship for both academics and for Track & Field for the College of Idaho. Shirts shared that she will be jumping and possibly spriniting for the team. She plans to major in Elementary Education and minoring in Communications, “I have grown up in the school system. Both of my parents have been teachers. I love working with kids. I was a Sunday School teacher, I have been a TA for two years, I teach and coach swim lessons and teams, I just love working with kids. I think that is just where my heart belongs,” stated Shirts.
Family and being close to home are part of the reason Shirts chose College of Idaho. Currently one of her sisters is attending C of I and that was a positive point attending the school. Shirts also shared that the Track and Education programs are also why she chose the school she commented, “I know their Track program is just phenomenal and their Education program is amazing.”
Shirts shared her gratitude for those who have helped her be successful thus far stating, “I want to thank God first of all for giving me the opportunity to do this and blessing me. I thank my parents because they have been coaching me for the last 18 years and they are my biggest supporters. I thank my sisters, my coaching staff, my teachers and the community here in Weiser.”
Kylee Quinton also received both an academic and athletic scholarship for the College of Idaho and will be a part of C of I’s Cross Country and Track & Field programs. Quinton shared her thoughts on attending the College of Idaho stating, “I’m excited for it, excited to see where it takes me. I am excited to meet new people and to experience the next level of schooling.”
Quinton shared that with this scholarship opportunity and how close to home College of Idaho is, it just made the most sense for her to choose the College of Idaho. She is undecided on what degree she specifically will be shooting for but knows it will be math related. Quinton doesn’t want to teach, but is looking into the possibility of going into Engineering.
Quinton is grateful for those who have supported her along the way stating, “I am thankful for my parents and family for pushing me. I am thankful for all my coaches and friends for all that they have done to support me.”
