I didn’t until I was told by some young people in town who love the sport and want to be able to practice their sport just like those who play football or baseball. After hearing this, I did some research.
Skateboarding was added to the Olympics in 2020 with participation of 80 athletes from 25 countries with the United States team winning two metals in the sport.
I’m Christina Stanley and I ‘m running for a seat on the Weiser City Council because I believe our city council should reflect the differences we have in Weiser, including the differences in what is considered a sport.
Weiser has beautiful parks with play structures for our little ones, ball fields, traditional sports courts, a fishing pond, and a center for our seniors to gather. Where we fall short is in providing facilities for other sports like skateboarding, BMX, scootering, inline skating, and wheelchair sports to name a few.
A skateboard park has been wanted by many of our young people for years. One was provided years ago and then removed because I am told the city council thought it “attracted the wrong crowd”. I don’t know how true that reason for removal is, but that wrong crowd are now Olympic Athletes.
I’m not promising a skate park when elected, but I do promise to listen to all residents including our young people and bring their ideas forward to my fellow council members for thoughtful discussion.
