Resolution Opposing School Vouchers

WHEREAS, public education is a cornerstone of democracy, ensuring that all students, regardless of background or economic

nondiscriminatory practices; and

WHEREAS, public schools are accountable to taxpayers and adhere to academic standards, financial transparency, and

WHEREAS, school vouchers divert public taxpayer dollars to private schools, which are not held to the same standards of accountability, transparency, and inclusion; and

and

WHEREAS, the Idaho Constitution requires that a free and uniform system of public education be provided to all Idahoans;

WHEREAS, an educated public benefits all Idahoans by fostering economic growth, civic engagement, and a well-informed society; and

WHEREAS, public tax dollars are collected from all citizens to support institutions and services that benefit the entire community, including public education; and

WHEREAS, redirecting public tax dollars to private and home-schooled students serves only those individuals and does not contribute to the common good in the same manner as public schools; and

WHEREAS, public funds should be allocated in a manner that ensures equitable access to educational resources for all students; and

WHEREAS, the diversion of public education funds to private entities undermines the integrity and effectiveness of public schools, which serve the vast majority of Idaho’s students; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Weiser Board of Trustees affirms its commitment to the principles of public education as outlined in the Idaho Constitution and opposes any efforts to divert public tax dollars from public schools to private or home-school education; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board urges state legislators and policymakers to uphold their constitutional duty to provide adequate and equitable funding for public education, ensuring that every Idaho student has access to a high-quality, publicly funded education.
