Is Weiser Getting a Dog Park?

Weiser- Monday, May 12th at the Weiser City Council meeting the proposal for a Dog Park was brought before the council. Local citizens, Sandy Mockwitz, Jim Felton, Ben and Theresa Thompson, Patrick Nauman and Gina Clark have been working to pull together a plan for Weiser to get a Dog Park. They presented the council with their vision for the park and the possibility of putting the Dog Park at the north end of the Soccer Complex off of Park Street.

The park would be a fenced area 309 feet long by 80 feet wide. It would have an 8 foot gate for mowers to be able to get in and mow the grass. The group shared that the maintenance for the area would be low since it already has water and lawn maintenance happening in the area they wish to fence off. The area would also have a double gate system for dog owners to safely leash and unleash their dog going into and out of the park area. The group plans to work with other entities such as the fire department, The Weiser River Animal Shelter and 4-H clubs to acquire dog equipment for the park. They plan to have a shaded area and water fountains for both humans and dogs. The project is estimated to cost a little over $15,000 to complete and the group is working with the LOR Foundation to get grants to cover the cost.

The City Council was in favor of the location and the plan to move forward with the project. The group feels that having a Dog Park will provide a safe place for dogs to get fresh air and exercise off leash. Having this space will provide ample room for dogs to run and chase balls or frisbees, helping to relieve boredom. The Dog Park would also give an opportunity for dogs to socialize as well as their humans with other dog owners.
