4-H Survival Club

By Tony Buthman

The Washington County 4-H Survival Club has started holding training sessions for the 20-21 year. The focus this year will mirror a lot of what the club did last year only better. We learned more ideas to be included for this year so we expect it to be better than our inaugural year.

The goals and objectives target will be to develop skill sets in regards to emergencies, whether they are small or even catastrophic both natural and manmade. The participants will learn the 3’s of survival to guide them with priorities for emergency situations and awareness. Discussions will include threats such as weather events, to taking care of ones-self while on an outdoor adventure.

Topics will include Basic First Aid, building a Just in Case Bag, communications, shelter building, fire starting including modern and primitive techniques, harvesting and purifying water for safe consumption, navigation using map and compass, learning knots for everyday use, and using edged tools safely.

There is a group of last year participants that will be honing the skills they learned last year and will assist in teaching to the new participants. Also these participants will leave the program with certification for certain skill sets if they so desire. These participants are to looking to do more hands on application.
