Cambridge Senior Chatter

By Nate Estes

I hope everyone had a pleasant 4th of July celebration.  My sister, Joan, and I attended the events in Council this year.  We missed out on the outdoor activities because it rained.  We did, however,  attend the BBQ at the Council Senior Center. And, I must say, the BBQ dinner was well worth the trip.  I also visited with my good friend, Pastor Jim Rogers, and his wife, Elaine. I hadn’t seen them for several years, so it was a real treat for me.

After the dinner, we watched movies on Netflix and had a good visit.  I don’t usually do holidays, but this one ranked right up there with one of the most enjoyable.

Where did all that rain come from anyway?  My weather app said it might lightly drizzle; what an understatement!  Do any of you have an app that is more accurate than not?  I am interested in finding one. Let me know at the senior center if you have any recommendations.

We have a new fundraiser starting Wednesday, July 9th.  It’s called “Split the Pot.”  It works something like this:  You can purchase tickets for a dollar apiece.  You are given a numbered double ticket.  You fill out your Name and phone number on the top half, and we deposit it into our spinning wheel; you keep the other half.  When the designated time is up, we hold a drawing.  The winner gets half of the pot, and the seniors get the other half.  It’s simple, and it’s open to any adult who wants to play.  I don’t know when the end date will be, but I’m sure it will be decided at our next Board meeting.

Our next board meeting is Wednesday, July 9th at 1:30 PM.  Last week was so short, I didn’t realize it was coming up so soon.  If you are on the board, please consider yourself notified!

On Wednesday, July 16th, we will be having our Community Food Pantry.  It starts at 1:30 p.m. and closes at 3 p.m.  The following day, Thursday, July 17th, we take our monthly shopping trip to Ontario. I will have a sign-up sheet on the front table for those of you wishing to go with us.

Wednesday, July 23rd, Crystal from Umpqua Bank will be here to give a presentation on how to avoid scams and keep your data safe.  I realize many of you already know this information, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded,  especially with the rapidly changing internet and more sophisticated online criminals.

Don’t think it can’t happen to you, because no matter how smart we think we are, you could just be having a bad day, and someone catches you with your guard down, it happens.  Mark your calendars now, so you don’t miss it.  Wednesday, July 23rd, at 12:30 p.m.

It’s time for the weekly menu!

Friday, July 11 at Noon:  Dorito Pie, Garden Salad, Peaches, Corn Chips, and Banana Bars.

Wednesday, July 16 at Noon:  Sweet and Sour Chicken, Rice, Mandarin Oranges, Salad, Mixed Vegetables,  Roll, and Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting.

Friday, July 18 at noon:  Pizza!  Your choice of Sausage and Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon with Pineapple, or Chicken Alfredo.  Salad, Mandarin Oranges, and Dessert.

Until next time, remember to keep smiling, because smiles are contagious.  Smile, and pretty soon everyone you meet will be wearing one!
