The Weiser Native American Club was founded by Loretta Hawkins and Valerie Edward in the spring 5 years ago. In speaking with Glenda McDaniel, this group was established to preserve and honor the traditions, integrity and pride of the Native American culture, past and present, which is often overlooked in today’s fast-paced high tech society. Besides Glenda and her husband Ron, the members of this group include Li Wong, Cofounders Richard and Irene Crabb, Crystal Demoss-Brewer and her daughter Kaitlyn. The group comes together to work on handmade Native American items which will be sold at a variety of events including Weiser Fiddle fest, pow wows, and craft fairs. All costs for materials are out-of-pocket. Due to the generosity of the Weiser Public Library, the group is able to gather there for their meetings and to work on their crafts. On behalf of the group, Glenda wants to give a big “Thank you” out to the library for their kind generosity. Besides making traditional items, their group also spends a great deal of time time educating the public about the Native American culture. With November being recognized as Native American Heritage month, this group pays an annual visit to the 4th grade class at Park School. It is during this time the members share with the children the vast knowledge and skills of the Native American people. At the end of each visit, each student and teacher is presented a handmade gift. Recently, Glenda’s husband performed a blessing in the Native American room at the Snake River Heritage Center museum. Some of the items from the group were donated for the new display. If you are interested in learning more about the group or would like to become a member, Glenda encourages you to comment on their Facebook page. It is here they announce meeting dates and events as well as answer questions there. She also wants people to know that you do not have to be Native American to join the group.
