In March of 2021, nonprofit founder Leslie Scantling was looking for something to help fill the void in her life that was left after several massive life changes that had taken place over the course of three years. Battling breast cancer, surgeries, a death in the family, divorce, and an empty nest after her children left for college, Scantling wanted to bring something together to also fill the loss of the closure of the Susan G. Komen organization.
Scantling and her mother, also a breast cancer survivor, had participated in many events and races in support of cancer awareness. She decided to organize a walk for close friends and family. With an extraordinary turnout, she decided to go bigger! Flock Cancer was born! The event quickly grew to include more than 400 survivors and supporters, with $25,000 raised for Oncology Recovery Program. In their first two years of operation, they have raised close to $100k.
As a 501c3, the mission for Flock Cancer is to fill the void left by Komen and provide an event to raise awareness and funds that benefit local breast cancer fighters, survivors, families, and even local programs. With no paid staff, this organization is run by volunteers who raise money that benefits folks in the area. Recently, Scantling reached out to Mabel Dobbs, Executive Director of Angel Wings Network, Inc in Weiser, and asked if they could give event funds to the organization to help with their efforts in cancer support and resources. Dobbs was thrilled and excited to accept the generous offer!
On May 13th, from 10am to 12pm, the Flock Cancer Street Stroll will be open to the public and participants of all ages. Attendees are invited to walk a loop around historic Harrison Boulevard to support breast cancer care and research in the Treasure Valley. The event is $35.00 for adults which includes an event T-shirt. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink and decorate themselves in flamingo gear! There will be cheering, music, food trucks, flamingos, and promotional live voices from KIVI Channel 6 as well as The River Boise and 107 K-Hits. There will be a survivor’s area where people can come together to share their experiences. Saint Alphonsus mammogram van will also be onsite offering screening appointments and consultations.
Angel Wings Network, Inc volunteers will be participating and would like to invite the people of Weiser and surrounding communities to participate in this exciting event!
