Incident at SW 4th Avenue Crosswalk in Ontario

Ontario Police Department Press Release

The Ontario Police Department has been made aware of the recent close call at the crosswalk on SW 4th Avenue near the hospital and the video of the incident. We want our community to know that we take this matter seriously, and we are committed to being proactive in keeping our children and pedestrians safe.

This year, we have launched a new program that places officers in various school zones, and we are actively compiling data to determine where our presence is most effective. The SW 4th Avenue crosswalk was previously identified by officers as part of the Oregon Safe Routes to School Zones, and through community partnerships, warning lights were installed to increase visibility and safety.

Regarding this specific incident, an officer has been assigned to attempt to identify the driver by reviewing potential video evidence and speaking with witnesses. We strongly encourage the driver involved to come forward. Anyone with information that may help identify the vehicle or driver is asked to contact Malheur County Dispatch at 541-473- 5125 and reference case number 25P08620.

Our department is made up of many men and women who have school age children of their own. This video was as troubling for us to watch as it was for the public. Please be assured that we are actively working on this incident and will continue to do so.
