By Paula Olvera, Prevention Department Supervisor at Lifeways: I am honored to be able to award the Judge Terry Thompson Prevention Award tonight, to an individual that is truly deserving. Tonight’s winner is legendary-as this winner’s name is synonymous with prevention in Malheur County. You could say that this person is an inspiration to everyone they encounter. You could also call this person neat, both as in cool, top notch, awesome, and as in organized, tidy and skillful. This person is truly delightful to be around. To say this person is supportive is an understatement. The new and clever ideas this person comes up with are enterprising to say the least. I do not know if this person is into yoga or knows how to yodel, but in working with youth there is none better! If anyone working in the field of prevention in Malheur Co. has a ‘Get-r-done” attitude and a Do-er mentality it is this year’s winner of the Judge Terry Thompson Prevention Award-Lindsey Nieksens! I have only known Lindsey for a few years, but in that time, I have come to love her! I am awed and inspired by her dynamic energy, her creativity, and the selfless empathy she shows every day. No matter what the fight is, Lindsey is the person you want in your corner! Lindsey has a unique ability to connect with people of all ages and abilities. She doesn’t skip a beat, even when a kindergartener shares their story of almost being eaten by a kangaroo, she skillfully keeps pencils out of small children’s ears without stopping a lesson and keeps her composure when a 1st grader draws a picture of a cookie that is holding something…..well… questionable! Children of all ages run to hug Miss Lindsey, even when they are wearing a ghost costume. Teens trust her enough to share their most vulnerable selves. Elderly women who have never met her before take her by the hand and introduce her as their granddaughter. While the older gentlemen …well let’s just say they are not shy when she comes to visit! Yes, there are some inside jokes hidden here, but no matter what the situation, Lindsey exudes a true and genuine empathy for every human, and that is a rare gift. She handles even the most delicate situations with grace and dignity. If you are lucky enough to be in Lindsey’s close circle, you know how thoughtful, selfless and genuine she is. She makes people feel truly seen and heard. Lindsey radiates positivity and hope and leaves a lasting imprint on every life she touches. I know I am a better person to know her. So, it is with great honor that we recognize Lindsey Nieskens as this year’s recipient of the Judge Terry Thompson Prevention Award.
