Letter to the Editor- From Kirk Chandler

By Kirk Chandler

Leo Tolstoy was recognized for the saying; “Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it.” That brings the question of where do elected officials’ responsibility fall. Our founding fathers that put together the Constitution understood the reason for government. They had just come from a place where the government controlled everything. John Locke argued that individuals possess inherent natural rights. Including life, liberty and property. The purpose of the government is to protect those rights. If the government fails to do so, the people have the right to alter or abolish it.

Our county is going through such a time. Our Commissioners have taken it upon themselves to take away the rights of property ownership in our county. The lawsuits that are pending and have been filed, if they go through, have the probability of bankrupting our county. We the people have elected a Prosecutor to protect the county citizens from lawsuits by upholding the Constitution. He does this by insuring the codes are Constitutional so he can defend them in court. As stated by Commissioner Marvin in Monday’s meeting, they have NOT followed the advice of our Prosector, True Peace. This puts the county in a liable position that True Pearce cannot defend. Commissioner Wilkerson is the only Commissioner we have now that is standing up for the people’s rights.

The Commissioners have the responsibility of having a code that protects our rights under the Constitution. The code needs to be updated and changed, but to the extent of giving back property rights in the county, not taking more of them away. We the people of Washington county do not need the government telling us whether we can exercise our property rights.

Judy Boyle told me when I ran for commissioner to always follow the Constitution and that would protect me and the county. We need Commissioners now to turn this around and do as the oath they took said; to uphold the Constitution. That is the only way to get out of this mess that Commissioner Harberd and Marvin have put the county in is going back to obeying the Constitution. The law they are following is the law of majority rule. Majority rules will never end well for the citizens that depend on government to protect their Life, Liberty and Property.
