Caldwell, Idaho – Road rage incident ends with a shooting. The Payette County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho State Police are currently investigating a shooting that occurred at approximately 9:10 am on Sand Hollow Road in Payette County this morning. The details of this incident are currently limited. Payette County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating this incident. More information will be made available as the investigation continues.

The Payette County Sheriff’s Office is asking that the public avoid the area of Sand Hollow Road between SE 8th and Black Canyon Road. Traffic in this area is being diverted to I-84.

The Payette County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident with the assistance of the Payette Police Department, Fruitland Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Idaho State Police.

This is a road rage incident involving two vehicles with two male drivers. The vehicles came to a stop on Sand Hollow Road, south of Black Canyon Road. The details of what happened next are still being investigated; however, it concluded with one driver shooting the other driver with a handgun.

The shooter in this incident has been detained and is cooperative with law enforcement. We do not know of any further risk to the community.

Next of kin has not been notified. Names of those involved will be released at a later time.

The Payette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly road rage incident. The confrontation happened on September 15 at approximately 9:10 a.m. with two vehicles headed westbound on I-84. Both vehicles exited the freeway onto Black Canyon Road and then headed south on Sand Hollow Road. The vehicles were a white Nissan Frontier and a white Kia Optima. Both came to a stop after the driver of the Kia parked, blocking the road. The driver of the Kia then physically confronted the driver of the Nissan. The Kia driver damaged the vehicle’s mirror, attempted to break out the driver’s side window, and eventually opened the driver’s side door. The driver of the Nissan said that he feared for his life and shot the driver of the Kia. The details of the incident will be reviewed by the Payette County Prosecutor’s Office.

The driver of the Kia died at the scene. Next of kin has been notified. No charges have been filed at this time. The driver of the Nissan is a 71-year-old man from Boise, and the driver of the Kia has been identified as 32-year-old Charles Vincent Avery of Salem, Oregon.
