Weiser, ID-Casey Roubidoux has been a postal carrier for twenty years and nine of those years he has served right here in Weiser. For all those years he has had the same route and has built relationships with some of his customers.
One of those customers, Barb, meets Roubidoux every day at her mail box. He shared that they often chat a little about fishing, hunting and gardening as he hands her her mail. One day back in April Barb was not at the mail box when Roubidoux first arrived; he waited for Barb to appear. Getting worried he noticed her door was open, but the screen door was shut. As he looked he caught her moving towards the door, but noticed something wrong, “She was losing control of her body a little bit. She fell pretty hard and smacked her head against the wall. I think it kind of knocked her out,” stated Roubidoux.
Robidoux shared that he went into the house and immediately called 911. He called out her name trying to get her to wake up. She came to, but wasn’t coherent. Robidoux shared, “I just sat with her and talked with her, let her know that everything was going to be okay and that help was on the way.” Later Roubidoux learned that Barb was having a seizure and it was one of the worst ones she’s had in a long time.
For his action Roubidoux received the Hero of the Year Award through the Postmaster General Program. He was also spotlighted on the National Association of Letter Carriers. Both recognitions go to Letter Carriers that perform heroic and compassionate acts. Roubidoux was very humble when asked how he felt about the recognition stating, “I don’t feel I really needed to be recognized. I didn’t do anything anyone else wouldn’t have done. But I love my job. I always have and I love my customers.”
The Weiser Post Office has now had two recipients of this award; the other was Jennifer Miller back in March of 2009 when she helped a community member she noticed lying in a ditch that did not have the strength to get up.
Weiser is blessed to have such caring and compassionate Letter Carriers going over and beyond their duty looking out for the community. Congratulations to both Roubidoux and Miller and big thank you to both.
