The Judge Terry Thompson Award

Terry was born in Ontario, Oregon. he grew up in and graduated from Nyssa High School. Immediately, he began to dedicate his life to serving others through the Naval Service. Terry and his wife Debbie eventually settled back into his hometown to raise their family. Thompson later worked his way through the ranks to become Nyssa’s Chief of Police. After becoming injured in the line of duty, the retired from his position with the Police Department and teaching criminal justice, which later led to his position as Justice of the Peace for Malheur County. Judge Thompson taught Malhwur County how to better meet people where they are and aided in the development of the County Truancy Court, Juvenile Drug Court, Veterans Court, and Community Mental Health Court, all of which supported those who battled addiction and or mental health challenges. Terry’s passion was to serve others and make life better for them. He held a fondness for prevention and had a dedicated “Get’er done Attitude and a “Do’er” Mentality. He believed in those around him and felt there was always more he could do to support our community. Terry was a great man who devoted his time, influence, and life to more than sitting behind a desk and passing judgment. His personal life was also dedicated to the service of others. He and Debbie, cared for over 100 foster children and adopted 13 of them. Thompson was hands on, passionate, caring, and kind. He loved God, his family, friends, co-workers, and this community whole-heartedly. Judge Terry Thompson passed away in 2012. But he left behind this legacy, that “Selfless service is the highest expression of love and compassion to humanity”.
