Javier Hernandez is a local boy you’ve probably heard about before. At a very young age, “Javi” developed Leukemia not once but twice! And it is a heartache to report that his Leukemia is back again for a third time. To help his precious family, Living in the News is featuring this story to help spread the word about the fundraising efforts being made to supplement his family’s needs while he begins rigorous treatments once again.
On October 3rd, 2023, Javier’s mom, Mayra, reported that surgery went well, and his first round of chemo was completed. As a single mother, Mayra does her best to put aside her worries and emotional pain to be strong for her children. “Regardless of the pain and the situation and the battles life throws at him, he always manages to have a smile on his face,” she posted to social media. It is rare to see a photo of Javier without a smile. His face will light up the room.
On October 10th, Javier had to undergo a spinal tap in Boise, Idaho and was then transported to Portland, Oregon the next day for an appointment with a doctor at the children’s hospital. Five days ago, Javier was admitted to the hospital in Portland where he spent a few days going through X-rays, MRI’s, and other testing. Nurses have done their best to try to control his pain, which has made his ability to walk very difficult. Javi has had to endure a lot of pain recently.
As of today, October 31th, Javi is doing a bit better. He is smiling, eating, and in less pain than he was. He is on his way back to Idaho with his mom for a few weeks before having to return to Portland for treatment. Due to the seriousness of his illness, his care is a delicate matter, and his treatment plan changes at times. The family could use the community’s help and support as they continue this cancer journey, now for the third time, to get Javi healthy once again. The cost of traveling, eating on the go, and paying bills becomes a heavier burden when a single mother must be with her ill child and is unable to work as much to support the family. Any amount of donation is a help to this family.
