Vale Heritage Reflections Mural Society Rejuvenating the Second Vale Mural

The Vale Heritage Reflections Mural Society recently held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the rejuvenation of the second renovated mural, The Branding by artist Larry Bute. Friday, September 26th, 2025. The story behind this mural is deeply tied to Vale’s ranching history. The first cattle intended for domestic production appeared in the area in the 1830s, when missionaries left sore-footed animals at Fort Boise. By 1843, large herds were being driven along the Oregon Trail. As waves of pioneers moved west and prospectors rushed toward the gold fields, the demand for provisions grew, and livestock became essential. With so many animals roaming the open range, brands became vital in marking ownership. This ancient practice, using a hot iron to burn a permanent mark into the hide, dates back thousands of years. The brands displayed within the mural honor local ranchers who generously donated toward the project’s completion. The Branding also holds a unique place among Vale’s murals, it is the only one originally created using spray paint. To honor the mural’s original style, artist Larry Bute was contacted about the restoration. While he shared that he no longer works on scaffolding, he recommended David Ozuna and his daughter, Samantha, of One Bear Productions, who successfully rejuvenated the mural using spray paint, just as Bute had done. The project was also a family effort. With their father depicted as one of the central figures at the branding fire, the Schroeder Family, including Alberta, Laura, Paul, John, Kathy, Alan, and Sara, came together to support and help make this restoration possible. Vale’s murals continue to stand as vibrant reflections of the community’s diverse heritage and enduring pride in preserving local history. The Vale Mural Society is a volunteer-driven, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and donations are always welcomed to ensure future restoration efforts.
