Surviving Hearts The Dream Continues

By Marsha Woods

Fourteen years ago, a young woman’s world, one in which held such expectations and goals, came crashing down with four devastating words, “You have cancer!”

That woman was Shelly Colvard, who along with her husband Paul are the founders of Surviving Hearts, a local cancer support group dedicated to the alleviation of a part of the frightening diagnosis. Shelly’s fear of the future was exasperated by the pressures of financial strain. Shelly and Paul were perplexed but concentrated on a dream of recovery before solution. The dream evolved. It has been said that people with a collective purpose are brought together for a reason.

Dr. Sarah Bolarder, Director of Radiation Oncology at MISTI, Saint Lukes in Fruitland, Idaho, ironically connected with the Colvards. A friendship developed; a natural dream was revealed; an inspired reality resulted.

The initial goal of the Surviving Hearts team was to simply aid in the comfort of cancer in the form of travel expenses to and from treatment centers. Due to the benevolence and determination not to let go of a dream, there are smiles of hope on the faces of many who only had fear in their lives.

Money raised through much time and dedication has provided a shorter road of ease to those who struggle with uncertainty. Funds for their efforts fill up gas tanks for those who need to travel across the state for treatment, among other amenities. Evidence of the group’s determination can be confirmed in the serene, calming atmosphere of the respite House located in Fruitland Idaho.

Dreams are never-ending! Saturday April 23, “A Night At Sunnyside Farms” will be the seventh fundraiser for Surviving Hearts.

Festivities will be held in the idyllic setting of Sunnyside Farms, located at  Sunnyside Road in Weiser Idaho. The magic begins with a social hour at 4p.m. , followed by a mouthwatering tri-tip buffet provided by Ari-Beef. The evening will be filled with activities, including live music by the infamous local group, The James Gang.

Live and silent auctions have proven to be a large part of the enthusiasm. Mingling and meeting others with a commonality and love for the cause is an equal part of the event.

Tickets for this event are $35 per person or $70 per couple. They can be purchased with debit or credit cards, or by calling 208-781-1778. Tickets will be $10 more if purchased at the door.

A dream never dies if it is kept alive by its realization!
