Annex Charter School Project Night

Thursday, April 13th Annex Charter School held their first Project Night Open House for students and their families. Annex Charter School is a Pre-K through 7th grade school. Each grade level had projects to display or present for those who attended.

Families were encouraged to visit all the classes and grades to checkout projects regardless of what grade their students were in. Some of the projects shared that evening were the life cycle of the butterfly, growing microgreens, animal reports, solar system, inventions, earthquakes, projects with potato batteries and even Greek God plays and an art gallery to enjoy.

Mr. Joe Burris, the sixth and seventh grade teacher at Annex Charter School, created a robot racing project using VEX Robotic for his students, “We have some VEX Robotics equipment here at the school. It’s the same equipment that Weiser High School kids use for their VEX Robotics competitions. This project in particular they were not doing any coding. They got to mess around with a little mechanical engineering and learned how to connect parts correctly. One of my goals with using the VEX kits is to hopefully get some of the kids excited to go over to Mr. Lundberg’s class at Weiser High School.”

The sixth and seventh grade students built simple robot racers from a basic model with the option to add their own little twits. Then connected the joystick remotes to the robots and were able to race them.

The Annex Charter School Project Night Open House was a success with over half their student body’s families attending the event. The school plans to host another project night in the future. The school has plans for more fun activities coming up and next they will be hosting a STEAM Camp in June for their students focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. This will be their third year doing the STEAM Camp.
