Balance It Out

By Casey Hoskins

I got new floors only days after Christmas was done. Truth be told, I wanted to hold onto that Christmas-y glow we had achieved in the living room for a few more days but no such luck. I made sure I was busy at work, even though my door said I was out until the 3rd, just so I could avoid the chaos that was going on at the house. That did not stop me from creating a veritable mess for myself at the shop, though. Yeah, I am crap at leaving well enough alone. This is also known as balance…or the lack thereof.

Do we ever really achieve balance? I think we do but I believe it is short-lived and always to be aspired to. Every time I know there is going to be a break in my schedule I think of all the ways I can change up my normal routine to acquire a little balance. Every new year also brings a birthday for me and this year I began to wonder if I should start looking for balance in the every day. You know, in things like routines, what we eat, when we sleep, that sort of thing. I mean, January is the prime month for purging, packing, and re-doing, right?  Can balance be found in what we choose to do every day? I believe it can.

My first week of January was successful in only one way. I went to the gym the three days I said I would and did the routines I had saved for each trip. The rest of it was a complete disaster in my estimation. (This may or may not be an exaggeration.) First, the two jobs I had on the schedule developed issues that could not be resolved in the time allotted. Second, I try to get into the shop early at least twice a week but that didn’t happen due to my couch being comfier while drinking my coffee. Finally, I was tired. Sleeping has been eluding me lately and I have a sneaking suspicion it has been due to my lack of appropriate and consistent diet as well as all the binge watching I’ve done. This is the one time of year that I take time off, but I am beginning to see that taking time off should be more specific and that some routines offer more than consistency.

As I sit here typing this, I am surrounded by planners, both this and last year’s, bills, and notes. All of this is in an effort to discover what my day should look like for me rather than what is conventionally done.  Work, exercise, family, meal planning, homeschooling, and time to create are all important to me. I figure if I can find a way to fit all of this in on a daily/weekly basis then I will, over time, have more space in my noggin to let ideas flow and time in my calendar to do the bigger things that bring me joy but can only happen on occasion. Also, it will help me sleep.

Winter is a natural time to slow down, let the old fade and gear up for the renewing vibes of spring. This being said, I cannot afford to sleep with the bears until the dawning of spring, but I can arrange a schedule that is maybe not so overwhelming to allow for some extra down time. I will leave you with this thought: schedules and routines are opportunities to create a balanced life that is uniquely yours. May yours be full of what brings you joy and allows you to give back to the life around you.
