It’s My Joy

This spring has brought some wonderful rainfall to the area and that’s good news if flowers are your thing and for Margene Horne, flowers are most definitely one of her things. “I have been gardening my whole life, but not quite like this. I lost my husband four years ago and started buying statues and fountains. I think I got a little carried away.”  Margene shared that she has a passion for flowers but had not really dived into flower gardening until she was an adult, but she believes she got her love for them from her mother, “My mother loved flowers and that’s where I think I get it, from her.”

If it is over eighty degrees Margene has to water every day. In the beginning she had 6 two gallon watering cans that she would fill and refill to water all her flowers. Recently she was introduced to retractable hoses and says they make the job a lot easier and faster due to their ability to expand then retract and how light they are. She shared that now it takes her about an hour and a half to water all her flowers each morning.

Margene joked that she planned to start slowing down but stated, “I was going to cut back because I’m 88 years old, but it didn’t work. This year I have forty flower baskets, at least!” Flower baskets line her driveway, front walkway and throughout her yard along with her other flowers that she has planted. She shared that she didn’t really have a favorite flower, but in the baskets she likes the Calibrachoa. When asked why so many flowers and baskets she simply stated, “It’s my joy, you know. It’s just my joy.”
