Letter to the Editor-A Call for Civility in Our Community-Delton Walker

With more than 50 years as a proud citizen of Washington County and a Weiser Wolverine, I’ve witnessed a concerning shift in our community’s dialogue, especially in recent months. I urge both Weiser and Washington County to uphold the values of civility and respect that have long defined us. Let’s strive to restore the respectful and civil interactions that once characterized our community.

In today’s interconnected society, the decline of civility has been intensified by social media platforms and other digital means, as well as small group meetings and documentation, which often foster negativity and division. It’s far too easy to hide behind screens and unleash hostility upon those with whom we disagree. However, such behavior only deepens, divides, and damages relationships.

In our tight-knit community, where everyone knows everyone, the importance of civility cannot be overstated. Each of us holds the power to shape the course of society through our actions and words. How do you want to be remembered in our community?

As citizens of Washington County, let us embrace the power of civility—to engage in respectful discourse, to seek understanding even in disagreement, and to foster empathy in our interactions. By doing so, we can reignite the spirit of civility that has long been a hallmark of our community.

Thank you!

Delton Walker
