School Board Election — Still Local??

Power2Parents, a Las Vegas founded political group, has conducted a well-planned program of rallies and protests to influence the Weiser school board election. Rather than a local, non-partisan contest about community connections and the skills needed to properly run an institution with varied tasks to perform, this group has focused on bringing a background of national political issues to the race, to inflame and distract the voters from the need for calm and competent oversight of Weiser’s school system. A score of people with this organization have regularly participated in a series of events that, rather than help the administration through the tough situations it must deal with, hinder its positive efforts with their attacks on our educators.

Out of the blue, P2P fabricated a “voter information night” not hosted by a neutral moderator and provided an invitation to the candidate it opposes of only a few days. Comments were then made berating that candidate who could not attend. Next, rather than ask for a P2P spokesperson to be on the agenda to address the October school board meeting, P2P brought its crowd to attempt the contemporary political ploy of bullying and intimidation. And now, a week before the election, it has orchestrated a protest against the high school with a some outsider P2P officer to help run its show.

As a former teacher who experienced broadbased community support for our school system, and locally formed leadership that always moved it forward in an award winning manner, I am disappointed that national partisan politics have been inserted into Weiser’s school board election. Local stakeholders who focus on local needs should speak to the issues rather than having outside proxies without wide community connection making noise to try to hijack all the attention.

Marg Chipman has been available to the public at hundreds of public meetings in her years on the board. Her leadership has been clear and well-known. She has broad support from a wide variety of patrons and has worked with many educational organizations that promote progress for our students. Please put aside the distractions of the noisy crowd, and vote for her proven competence and her balanced approach to dealing with the many issues involved running our schools.
