Park School’s Mrs. Armstrong Awarded Grant for A.R. Store in School Library

The Idaho CapEd Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports educators throughout Idaho with monthly grants to educators in support of various programs.  The librarian at Park School in Weiser, Mrs. Cathy Armstrong, wanted to apply for a grant through the foundation as a way to earn money to help reward fourth and fifth grade students as they reach their Accelerated Reader goals.

“When Cap Ed came to discuss their grant opportunity, we both thought this would be a great opportunity to possibly make that happen.  I helped submit the grant application for Mrs. Armstrong,” shared Park School Principal Brooke Winston.

Two weeks ago, Winston received an email that Mrs. Armstrong’s proposal had been chosen as a recipient!  “They wanted it to be a surprise, and I was very excited about it!”  Principal Winston invited the CapEd representatives to visit during an already scheduled assembly.  Mrs. Armstrong’s husband was secretly invited to the assembly so that he could witness the award being presented.  “I also invited our superintendent and school board members so they could be part of the event,” explained Winston.

Cathy Armstrong was thrilled to learn of the grant reward of $600.00.  She shared that the money will be used for the A.R. Store.  When students read a book, they are able to take a comprehension test to demonstrate their knowledge of the book.  When students pass their tests, they earn points.  As students reach certain point levels, they are able to purchase prizes with the points they’ve earned.  “I’m very excited.  The A.R. Store motivates students to read which is a win-win,” commented Armstrong.

“I am very happy for Mrs. Armstrong that CapEd was able to grant her wish to help our students feel rewarded for reaching their reading goals.  I was tickled pink to see her face when she realized that the check was for her to build her AR store for our students!  She just loves our students so much and wants the best for them.  She is truly amazing!” Principal Winston enthusiastically shared.
