Report of Idaho Republicans Summer Conference

By Kirk Chandler

Washington County Republican Central Committee had the opportunity to send 4 delegates to the summer conference. It was held in Challis, Idaho. Dorothy Moon is the State Chairwoman and Challis is where her and her husband live. The conference was held at the Living Waters Ranch west of the town of Challis. It is a very nice facility. Our county was represented by Kevin Kerby, county committee man,  Cathy Kaech, county committee woman,  Austin Thomason, county young republican  and myself, county chairman Kirk Chandler. The conference convened at 4:00 pm on Friday with the resolutions committee and the rules committee. They go through and discuss and debate all of the proposed resolutions and rules and if they pass they go to the delegates on Saturday during the main session. There were 28 resolutions and 13 rules that were considered in the main session. A few of the rules that had a lot of discussion was rule 2023-7 that took some of the members that are on the State Committee and removed their ability to have a vote. They are still on the committee, just don’t vote because all those that vote are elected. Rule 2023-8 made a new rule to address enforcement of the State Republican Platform. Rule 2023-11 put in place a presidential caucus. The primary in March was taken away by the legislators when they voted to not have a March election date. The other one that had a lot of discussion was Rule 2023-16. It established a process for counties that don’t pay their dues to the state are restricted as to their participation in State affairs.

The resolutions were mostly accepted by the body as presented by the committee. Resolution 2023-43 was about a no confidence vote for the legislators who voted against the override of HB 314. It was known as The Children’s School and Library Protection Act. It’s propose was to keep obscene and harmful material out of schools and libraries in the State. It was amended to add Governor Little’s name to the list for voting to veto it in the first place.

There were lots of discussions and things to do and lots of good people to visit with. I was impressed at the feeling that you were with people who are concerned about their families, children, government and most of all preserving the free-dom that we have in this great nation.  I was honored to be there with the others from our county and represent our county values.
