This February, the Idaho High School Activities Association held their annual State Wrestling Tournament

By Cody Smithies

This February, the Idaho High School Activities Association held their annual State Wrestling Tournament, where Weiser High School has once again proven its mettle with an outstanding performance at the state championships. Amongst the remarkable achievements of the Weiser Wrestling team, one name stands out prominently – Kash Cobb. Cobb, a junior who won the title of state champion in the 182-pound weight class, can be credited to his perseverance, hard work, and team’s constant support.

Thinking back on his own victory, Cobb sees his state championship as a major turning point in his career rather than the end. “To me personally, I try to view it as another step on the ladder of success,” Cobb says with modesty. “It’s not an endpoint at all, hopefully just a beginning to the things I plan to accomplish in life.” As he leads by example in terms of persistence and determination, his leadership within the team is obvious.

Cobb’s road to success was marked by intensity and alot of concentration on his immediate goals. He says, “I try to take it one day at a time. Trying not to focus on matches that have already been, always setting my sights on the next match. Setting many short-term goals leads to long-term success.”

Cobb needed to keep his composure and concentration, especially in the high-stakes final match. He acknowledges, “I try not to psych myself out.” “I just try to take the championship match with the same altitude as any other match.” His achievement was largely attributed to his mental toughness and his unwavering faith in his approach.

Cobb relied on his abilities and played to his strengths during the crucial match. He outlines his winning tactic, “sticking to what I know, skill-wise, and having faith in my technique,” with emphasis. This mindset, combined with a three-pronged strategy of enjoying himself, maintaining concentration, and carrying out a strong warm-up regimen, guaranteed his preparedness for the task.

Cobb credits Weiser High School’s outstanding coaching staff, whose persistent support has helped him reach new heights, for a large portion of his accomplishment. “Having the incredible coaching support and staff that I’ve had has always pushed me to achieve better and meet my goals,” Cobb says.

Beyond personal achievements, Cobb is proud of the way he represents his town and school on the wrestling mat. “The feeling of winning the state championship wearing my Weiser school colors and bringing home a win for my school and town makes me proud,” he says, considering the bigger picture effect of his accomplishments.

Cobb is still committed to achieving his objectives in high school and beyond. “I like to take it one match at a time,” he shares. “Setting short-term goals, not just looking for the win but to dominate.” His words of encouragement for the future or upcoming wrestlers, “In the end, remember it’s just a game.” carry true even off the mat.

Cobb’s pursuit of financial success motivates his interests outside of wrestling, demonstrating his ambition and will to succeed in all facets of his life. Cobb, both on and off the mat, represents the spirit of a great champion by combining athletics with other interests.

While Weiser Wrestling rejoices over its accomplishments, Kash Cobb’s victory serves as an outstanding demonstration of determination, initiative, and the persistent pursuit of greatness. Cobb’s path serves as an encouragement to those who dare to dream large and work relentlessly to convert those aspirations into reality, with his sights set on future achievements.
