Weiser City Council Reviews Firework Ordnance and Discusses Possible Changes

At the Weiser City Council July 10th meeting the council reviewed the city’s existing firework ordnance and discussed potential changes. The discussion centered on ensuring the safety and enjoyment of residents during the festive celebration while minimizing potential risks.

In recent years, concerns over firework-related accidents and disturbances prompted the Weiser City Council to initiate a comprehensive review of the existing firework ordinance. The council recognizes the significance of fireworks as a cherished tradition but also acknowledges the need for balancing safety and community well-being. This review aimed to address potential shortcomings and propose revisions as required.

Public safety emerged as a top priority throughout the discussions. The council explored several approaches to bolster safety measures and minimize the risk of accidents and injuries. The following was discussed:

  • Encourage the use of  designated fireworks discharge areas within the city such as the Weiser High School parking lot.
  • Encourage residents to stay off of high traffic streets and not to light fireworks on those streets.
  • Encourage communication between neighbors.
  • Implementing safety training programs for enthusiasts and individuals purchasing fireworks to heighten awareness and responsible usage.
  • Creating a Firework Safety campaign to run the month prior to the 4th of July.

The council also considered reevaluating the designated times for firework usage to address concerns related to noise disturbances and potential disruptions to residents’ sleep patterns.

The Weiser City Council’s review of the firework ordnance serves as a testament to their commitment to community safety and enjoyment. Through constructive discussions and consideration of possible changes, the council strives to strike a balance that allows residents to celebrate while preserving peace and minimizing risks. The council plans to put together a committee to go over their discussion points and take a closer look into any possible changes in the current ordinance.
