Weiser Veterans Unite Monthly for Camaraderie and Community Support

November 29, 2023

In the heart of Weiser, Idaho, a dedicated group of veterans gathers once a month for a unique blend of camaraderie, conversation, and community service. Meeting at the Veterans Memorial Hall, also the home of the Weiser Little Theater at 405 E 2nd Street, these veterans find solace and support in their monthly donut-fueled gatherings.

The group convenes on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 10:00 AM, creating a space where veterans can share experiences, discuss ways to support each other, and explore avenues to assist fellow veterans in the community. It’s an opportunity to bridge the gap between different affiliations.

“Although some of us are American Legion, or VFW, this is not about an affiliation to any chapters, but more about serving each other, and the community of veterans as a whole. We have your six,” Chavarria shared, emphasizing the inclusive and supportive nature of the gatherings.

Notably, the group, which wil not be meeting in December due to the proximity to Christmas, has achieved success in supporting veterans in various ways due to the group’s commitment to fostering mutual aid and community building.

In addition to their monthly meetings, the Weiser veterans group organizes two major events each year. One such event was a Veterans Day program held recently, where members of the group took the lead in organizing programs for each of the schools in Weiser. Another significant annual event orchestrated by the group is the Veterans March on Independence Day (the 4th of July).

For years, Jim Grunky spearheaded both events, but as the torchbearer of tradition, the responsibility has now been shared among the group members. This collaborative effort ensures the continuation of meaningful events that celebrate veterans and their contributions.

Each member of this group extends an invitation to all veterans, encouraging them to be a part of this community-oriented group. Recognizing that younger veterans might be occupied with work during the 10:00 AM meetings, the group is open to making accommodations to facilitate broader participation.

If you have any interest, please join us or contact Alex Chavarria at (208) 602-7138. As the Weiser veterans continue to forge connections, share stories, and contribute to the community, their monthly gatherings stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of service and solidarity among those who have served.
