Idaho Power announced new fire restrictions at campsites it maintains at C.J. Strike south of Mountain Home, in addition to a fire ban already in place at Woodhead Park in Hells Canyon.
Several days of hot, dry weather along with the threat of thunderstorms, has prompted prohibition of all fires (including the use of charcoal grills) at Cottonwood Campground, dispersed campsites at Jacks Creek and at Crane Falls. Smoking is also banned in those areas except within an enclosed vehicle or building, in a designated recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that has been cleared of all flammable material.
Cooking with a gas-fired grill or camp stove is permitted.
Even at campgrounds without a specific fire ban, visitors should use designated fire rings and fully extinguish campfires after use. Check idahopower.com/whatsopen for current fire restrictions.
If you plan to stay cool by visiting one of the many reservoirs or waterways near Idaho Power dams along the Snake River, keep these safety tips in mind.
Wear a lifejacket. Even experienced swimmers can be surprised by unexpected changes in water flows. Idaho Power has several stations along the Snake River where you can borrow life jackets for the day.
Don’t wade, swim, fish or anchor your boat directly upstream or downstream from a dam. Normal power plant operations can cause unexpected and rapid water changes. Buoy lines and cables are there to keep you a safe distance — don’t pass them. Also keep off riverbanks next to dams.
