The Ramp That Love Built

At Love in the Name of Christ Washington County the mission is all about organizing people to love and serve our neighbors and make a difference in their lives. Recently, volunteers through Love INC helped a neighbor with a big need. Ken Bartoschek is a lifetime Washington county resident. His most recent home is here in Weiser. When his wife Nancy started having great difficulty making it up the stairs into their home, they reached out to Love INC to see if we could find someone to help. It took a while, but volunteers were found who were willing to take on the project, though

it was no easy task. Because of the height of the door, the ramp had to be quite long. A couple of trees had to be removed before the construction could even begin. Jon Lundberg, high school teacher and coach, gave up a good chunk of his summer vacation to take the lead on the project. He is responsible, along with Rick Estes, for the planning and engineering of the ramp. Jon also is responsible for the actual labor and construction along with assistance from Love INC board chairman, John Wootton. Specialized tools for the job were loaned by Weiser Schools and Rick Estes.  Champion homes donated much of the lumber and supplies for the build. Ken Lukehart fabricated the metal transition piece that connects the ramp to the walkway. Remaining costs were provided by Love INC donations. A project that would have cost several thousand dollars, was accomplished for $278 because of the generosity of time, materials, and labor donated by neighbors to help another neighbor in need. Love INC feels blessed to be able to match those who can meet needs with those who are in need. Sadly, Nancy was in the hospital and then a care facility and passed away before she was able to return home and use this beautiful, lovingly constructed ramp, but Ken will still be blessed by this ramp as he himself was beginning to struggle with the stairs. We give our heartfelt condolences to Ken and the rest of Nancy’s family and friends.
