The Weiser Elks Lodge No. 1683 delivered a donation to benefit the City of Weiser Greenhouse After-School Program. Accepting the award on behalf of the program were Weiser Chief of Police Carl Smith, program director Ange’ Goodwin, and Cale Harvey, representing the Weiser Elks Lodge. Cale Harvey shared that the Elks strive to give assistance to local veterans as well as youth programs. The Elks applied for a grant and was awarded $3,500.
Harvey said that the process to apply for grants can be lengthy and sometimes consists of about five or more questions that must be answered to explain how the money will be used. In the past, the Elks have earned grants for various projects involving youth programs and local Vets. They have been able to provide new soccer goals and sponsor teams through the Weiser Recreation Department. Harvey mentioned that he is working on another grant right now that will hopefully benefit local youth sports teams.
Goodwin was thrilled to receive the check and said that it will be used to improve the program in some way. It has not yet been decided where exactly the money will go, but some of the ideas on the table are paying for needed repairs to the building and purchasing items for the program itself. The program is mainly funded by grants, donations, and fundraising efforts. In operation since 2001, the after-school program has improved the quality of life for a long of kids. It provides a safe space for kids to interact and have support from trusted adults.
“We are really excited about this,” Goodwin commented. The Chief of Police will have the final say in how the donation will be used to benefit the program.
